What is Guild Wars Factions?

Guild Wars Factions is the second campaign in the Guild Wars saga.

Has Guild Wars Factions been released yet?

Guild Wars Factions was released on a global scale on April 28, 2006. Many of those who purchased the Guild Wars Factions Pre-order participated in a Head Start event that began on April 27, 2006.

When did the game servers go "live" for Guild Wars Factions?

The retail version of the game launched at 7:01 GMT (12:01 a.m. PDT) on Friday, April 28, 2006. The Factions Head Start began one day earlier, at 7:01 GMT (12:01 a.m. PDT) on Thursday, April 27, 2006.

Is there a Collector's Edition for Guild Wars Factions?

Yes, in most regions of the world there is a Collector's Edition, which was released at the same time as the standard edition. You can find out more about contents of the North American and European retail copies on their product pages.

How much does Guild Wars Factions cost?

Guild Wars Factions has an estimated price of $49.99 for the Standard Edition and $69.99 for the Collector's Edition.

Did Guild Wars Factions have a simultaneous worldwide release?

Yes. Guild Wars Factions was released in North America, Europe, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau on the same date.

Is Guild Wars Factions an expansion pack or a stand-alone game?

Guild Wars Factions is a stand-alone product. Those who own Guild Wars are not required to purchase Guild Wars Factions in order to continue playing on their game account, and those who purchase Guild Wars Factions may play without purchasing Guild Wars. However, there is a strong level of interconnection between the two games that makes having them both an exceptional experience.

Is there separate content in each game, Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions?

Yes. It is possible for a player to enjoy the contents of either game without purchasing the other. Players who have both games may have their characters travel back and forth at will between the continents of Tyria and Cantha. And naturally, there is content that spans the two games that makes having both campaigns very appealing.

Now that Guild Wars Factions has been released, are there plans to update Guild Wars with new content?

Producing extensively expanded content for Guild Wars is not planned at this time. It is possible that there will be intermittent updates for Guild Wars that include modest amounts of expanded content or seasonal event content. And of course, updates such as skill balance changes will apply to both Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions and such updates are made frequently.

Will Guild Wars expand to other areas of the world?

We are actively looking at expanding Guild Wars to other regions and countries. Guild Wars launched in Japan on January 27, 2006, and launched in Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong on February 7, 2006. We anticipate the addition of even more regions or countries during 2006.

If I own more than one copy of Guild Wars, do I need to purchase more than one copy of Guild Wars Factions?

Each copy of a Guild Wars game furnishes you with an individual account. Therefore, if you have multiple accounts with which you wish to access both Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions content, you need one copy of Factions for each copy of Guild Wars that you own. The choice is yours, though, and you may have one account with access to both games, and a second account that accesses only one of the titles.

When I take my existing characters to the new areas of the world, do they keep their items, their levels, etc.?

If you purchase Factions, you will be able to travel to the land of Cantha, with your Ascended characters from Guild Wars (original Prophecies campaign). Inventory items, skills, and other possessions and attainments from Prophecies remain yours and remain useable within Guild Wars Factions.

What are the advantages of adding my Factions access key to my Guild Wars (original Prophecies campaign) account?

When you add the retail version of Guild Wars Factions to your existing account, your existing characters gain full access to the Factions content. You can travel back and forth between continents, gathering new skills and items from both, using skills you find on one continent to help you complete quests and missions on the other continent. Your existing characters can choose to take Assassin or Ritualist as a secondary profession, or you can create a new Assassin or Ritualist character and then travel back to the continent of Tyria to play missions from the original Prophecies campaign with that character. You can create PvP characters using a mix of professions, skills, and items from both campaigns, and have access to the widest possible array of strategies for PvP.

How do I link my Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions accounts?

When you purchase Guild Wars Factions, you will receive an access key. Simply open the Guild Wars log-in screen and follow the prompts to add the Factions access key to your Guild Wars Prophecies account. Then you will have access to all Prophecies and Factions content.

If I do not bind my Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions accounts when I set up the Factions account, can I have them bound together later?

No. You must make a decision about binding your Guild Wars/Guild Wars Factions accounts when you first set up Guild Wars Factions. We are not able to merge accounts at a later date.

How many character slots does Factions offer?

Guild Wars players can gain character slots in a variety of different ways. The following is a breakdown of how these slots are acquired.

  • Players acquire 4 base character slots with the purchase of their first Guild Wars campaign.
  • Each subsequent campaign purchase adds 2 character slots to an account if the newer campaign is linked to the original account. With linked accounts, players have access to all content from each campaign that they own.
  • Players may also purchase up to 26 character slots in the Guild Wars Official Store for $9.99 per slot.

If I do not purchase Guild Wars Factions, will I be able to create Assassins or Ritualists either as primary or secondary professions?

No. Assassins and Ritualists are exclusive to Guild Wars Factions and will not be accessible to players who have purchased only the original Guild Wars campaign.

Will I be able to team up with Assassin and Ritualist players if I don't buy Factions?

While you will not be able to create an Assassin or Ritualist unless you purchase Guild Wars Factions, you will, of course, be able to interact with those who own Guild Wars Factions when you join cooperative ventures or competitive matches.

Will my core profession characters be able to equip Assassin or Ritualist items?

A Guild Wars character is able to equip any non-customized item. However, because the character lacks the associated Attribute, the character's use of such items will not be particularly adept.

Can I trade my Factions items to those who do not own Factions?

Yes, you may trade items. However, such items cannot be equipped if they are customized items or if they are pieces of armor, which are always customized to an individual character.

Can people who own different campaigns play with one another?

Each campaign—Prophecies and Factions—offers access to a specific continent. If you own just one of the campaigns, you will have access to that campaign's home continent as well as Battle Isles. If you and your friend own different campaigns, you can play with and against one another only on Battle Isles. If you own both campaigns, but your friend owns only one of the campaigns—for example, your friend owns Factions—you can play together on Cantha, the home continent of Factions, and of course on Battle Isles as well.

Did the character level ceiling of 20 rise with Factions?

No, the maximum character level remained at 20 for Factions. The level cap of 20 is a fundamental balance mechanism for the Guild Wars series, which offers games that revolve around player skill. The leveling system allows you to track your progress as you start a character. But by Level 20, your character is fully trained and is ready to experience the most exciting content in the game.

Where does Guild Wars Factions take place?

Guild Wars Factions takes place in Cantha, an Asian-inspired three-nation continent far to the south of the lands of Tyria, the setting for the original Guild Wars campaign.

How do I get to Cantha?

Players who own both Factions and Guild Wars can travel by boat between the two continents through Lion's Arch, Kaineng Center, or the Great Temple of Balthazar.

What are alliances and how do they work in Guild Wars Factions?

Guilds can join together to form guild alliances. Allied guilds share Alliance chat, visit each other’s guild halls, and fight in each other's guild battles. Alliances can also gain control of towns and outposts in Cantha by participating in Alliance Battles, which give them the ability to trigger events and gain access to exclusive areas.

What is a faction? Should I join one?

Alliances belong to one of two warring factions, the Kurzick or the Luxon, and being a member of an alliance allows participation in Alliance Battles. Victory in an Alliance Battle earns faction points, and members can spend their points individually or they can add them to the alliance bank, which will enable the alliance to acquire control of towns and outposts. The outcome of these battles influences the progress of the war between the two factions. The current battle lines, and indications of the control of cities and towns, are always visible on the world map. Guild membership in Guild Wars Factions is extremely appealing and interesting for both cooperative and PvP players. By joining an alliance and achieving success with Alliance Battles, your guild gains control of high-level towns. With that control, guild members acquire access to elite cooperative content. In Factions, the strongest guilds most likely will not be made up exclusively of PvP or cooperative players. The strongest guilds will be a combination of both types of players, and such a combination will result in benefits for all members.

What are the game types within Guild Wars Factions?

There are four basic types of gameplay in Guild Wars Factions. They are:

  • Challenge Missions
    Cooperative missions involve specific scoring objectives, such as holding out against progressive waves of enemies. You will see personal bests and high scores displayed within the game.
  • Elite Missions
    The most powerful alliances have access to areas that are designed to be the ultimate cooperative challenge.
  • Competitive Missions
    Multiple teams compete to control resource points and achieve strategic victory. Victors earn faction points for their alliance which will determine the control of towns and outposts.
  • Alliance Battles
    Alliance Battles are large-scale, strategic PvP battles that allow factions to conquer new territory.

What is the new PvP area in Factions?

The majority of PvP encounters take place on a new continent: Battle Isles. All players from Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions will engage in combat on the Battle Isles, although two lower-level PvP areas—the Ascalon Arena and the Shiverpeak Arena—will remain in Tyria and will be accessible on that continent rather than on Battle Isles.

What kind of new content does Guild Wars Factions bring to the Guild Wars saga?

  • A total of 300 new skills, including 90 new elite skills, for the two new Factions professions and the six core professions from Guild Wars
  • More than 50 new locales, including story missions, combat arenas, and explorable areas
  • More than 100 new creatures
  • New guild halls
  • New faces, hair styles, and armor sets for both Factions and the core professions
  • New pets
  • Hundreds of new weapons and items

Does Guild Wars Factions have new guild emblems?

Yes. In fact, we had many new emblems added by the Guild Wars artists at release, and over several months, two fan contests brought us even more terrific emblems!
